Visilume camera improves efficiency and quality

March 24th, 2010 by agreen

visilume-camera-ex-light-on-stainless-mixing-vesselActive pharmaceutical ingredients and fine chemicals supplier, Macfarlan Smith, has improved operator efficiency at its Edinburgh plant following the installation of a Visilume VISULEX Ex Process Colour Camera System.

Installed in a Zone 1 Hazardous area and clean room environment where access to the sightports is restricted, the compact system enables synchronised monitoring and control of a pharmaceutical filter dryer from a single remote location.

Mafarlan Smith runs a state-of-the-art plant to the highest level of cGMP and prior to installing the camera, checking the contents of the dryer and controlling the drying process meant leaving the main plant and suiting up in clean room clothing which would take at least fifteen minutes.

The VISULEX camera is mounted over a sight port on the dryer vessel and is connected to a PLC in a safe area 130 metres away. The operator accesses the PLC via a SCADA System where an image of the filter dryer content is embedded on the  screen along side the dryer controls.

Using this single screen the operator can, via a Hazardous area Terminal back on plant, remotely control the camera zoom and focus to monitor when solids first appear then regulate the agitator in order to smooth the mix during mother liquid removal.

“Synchronisation of dryer contents monitoring and process control through integration of the camera image with the SCADA screen is the biggest benefit of the VISULEX camera system” says Ross Martin, Process Engineer at Macfarlan Smith.

“It results in more efficient production control, because the system saves time on suiting up staff to view the filter dryer and enables one man to monitor and control the dryer, as well as supervise other processes from a single location.”

“ The availability of continuous surveillance during the filtration operation also means that there is far more confidence in the process. For example, it is much easier to check that the cake is smooth during the mother liquor removal and before the wash is applied.  This helps to ensure product quality”.

This compact VISULEX Ex Process Colour Camera System is ATEX approved for Zone 1 and IP65 rated.  Standard software enables remote control of zoom and focus, and has an image capturing facility for saving historical images for quality control and other purposes.  The camera system can be connected to a single dedicated screen, via a PC or networks up to 500 metres away.

Higher output per watt with ATEX lights from Visilume

July 10th, 2009 by admin

usl071Visilumes now fully ATEX certified Lumiglas range of lights for use in Zone 1 areas offer safe and powerful illumination for process tanks and vessels.

The robust industrial light fittings employ high efficiency halogen bulbs combined with optimum reflector design to direct as much light as possible through the lens. Combined with a large diameter lens this gives the fittings the best light output to size ratio on the market offering the choice of smaller, lower cost, lights - taking up less space or better illumination for similar size.

The standard aluminum housings incorporate a lockable threaded access ensuring quick and simple bulb changes.

These robust light fittings are available with integral transformers and timers and include stainless steel models for particularly aggressive environments.

Sight-flow indicators eliminate glass breakage & slash maintenance costs

July 10th, 2009 by admin

news_sightflow1Safe operation and simple low cost maintenance are offered by Visilume sight-flow indicators with METAGLAS safety sight windows. In the event of seal leakage the glass covers may be safely tightened without fear of glass breakage eliminating the need for shutdown, full servicing off-line and holding of replacement glass

Visilumes new sight flow indicators use high strength METAGLAS safety windows that employ unique glass to metal fusion technology to give unbeaten resistance to impact & pressure. The metal ring encasing the fused glass window ensures there is no contact between the glass and retainers enabling the bolts to be tightened safely whilst the unit is in service.

New LED Light Cuts Ownership Costs

July 10th, 2009 by admin

Visilumes new fit and forget LED light offers more than a decade of maintenance free operation so it is an ideal choice to minimise costs.

Unlike conventional filament lamps, the LEDs are also resistant to vibration & physical shock so they are incredibly robust as well as durable.

In addition to the reliability of this great new product, the LED light emits a powerfully bright but cool light. Hence it avoids heating the product under observation, which is good news for some pharmaceutical and biotech processes.

The LED light is suitable for use in safe or Ex hazardous areas and its Stainless Steel housing, which is dust and water jet tight to IP65, can be mounted to suit your application.
